Photography Classes' Notes - How to Become a Photographer (The Series)

Welcome to How to Become a Photographer the Series.

I got this idea from John Lee Dumas from Entrepreneur On Fire podcasts. The idea was the last question that's part of his lightning round, when he asked his interviewee how they would start all over again in a new world, and that they have their skills, some cash and laptop. I modified the questions a little for photographers and started this series.

I confessed in an earlier post that I was an avid gamer in my youth. One game in particular was Final Fantasy XI. The game is a massive multiplayers role playing game. You have to learn to work together with other players online, using an avatar that do a particular job for the group. As you progress through the game, just like real life, more things and options open up to you when you gain more and more experience in your field. So I love doing research on my job to improve myself to be the best at my job. And when you master that job, start over and pick a new job to play.

I transferred that research skill from gaming to photography. The term photography encompasses too many jobs if you look into it. There are so many subcategories: wedding photographer, celebrity photographer, headshot photographer, still life photographer, product photographer, photo journalist, art photographer, etc. These all require specialization, and some times never cross paths in terms of the people you meet in your careers.

So here is the question I modified from www.eofire.com.

If you would wake up tomorrow in a new world similar to one before, but you know no one and the business you've built no longer exist. You have a laptop with internet access and no worries about food and shelter. Along with your current skills and a small sum of cash, $500. What would you do, and how do you become a photographer?

If you have an answer to this question, I would love to heard about it at the comment section below.

I know I will be writing up my answer in my next post for Fashion Photographer.

This is Charlie Wang, signing off. See you on my next post!
